Residential · Strip, sand, re-stain
Strip failing stain, sand splintered upper-face boards, oxalic brighten to neutralise UV oxidation, fresh penetrating semi-transparent stain that resists Calgary chinook freeze-thaw. Three visits over 7-14 days depending on dry time. Most Calgary wood restoration projects land between $400 and $2,000.
Why restoration is more than cleaning
Wood that has gone past the clean-and-brighten point needs the full restoration sequence. Strip the failing stain (years of UV breaks down film-formers and penetrating stains alike, leaves patchy colour and exposed wood); sand the splintered upper face (Calgary prairie UV cooks the soft grain into raised splinters that catch on bare feet); brighten with oxalic acid (neutralises the UV oxidation that turned the wood silver-grey, restores the cellulose-bright base colour); apply fresh penetrating stain (semi-transparent for grain show-through, sealer for clients who prefer natural). The Calgary climate is the constraint. Chinook freeze-thaw cycles work moisture into any stain crack, breaking down film-formers in 1-2 seasons. Prairie UV breaks down stain colour binders 2-3 years faster than coastal cities. The restoration cycle is shorter here than most regions — penetrating stain every 3 years on south-facing wood, 5 years on shaded north/east. Pair wood restoration with deck cleaning for the lighter pass on newer wood, with fence cleaning for the matched chemistry on perimeter wood or with sealing services for the sealing menu including wood-specific products.
How a Calgary wood restoration runs
Chemical stripper applied to failing stain, 10-15 minute dwell, pressure-rinse off. Followed by a low-pressure clean with surfactant. Splintered boards identified and marked for the sand pass.
Hand-orbital or belt sander on splintered upper-face boards (follow the grain), shop-vac dust collection. Oxalic acid brightener applied across the deck, 5-10 minute dwell, rinse — neutralises the UV oxidation, restores the natural cellulose-bright base.
Wood needs to reach under 15% moisture content before stain absorbs properly. Moisture meter check before any stain goes on. Chinook windows speed this up; cool wet stretches push the timeline to a full week.
Penetrating semi-transparent stain or sealer applied per product spec — typically one or two coats. 24-hour cure before furniture goes back, 48 hours before heavy use. Walkaround with homeowner to confirm colour and finish.
Calgary wood restoration realities
Calgary cedar restoration is on a tighter cycle than most Canadian markets. Chinook freeze-thaw drives moisture into hairline cracks in the stain film, breaking down film-formers in one to two seasons (versus three to five in coastal climates). Prairie UV is high-altitude and dry — colour binders fade two to three years faster than they would in Vancouver. South-facing decks see the worst of both; north and east-facing sections last longer. The right restoration product makes the difference. Penetrating semi-transparent stains (Sansin Enviro Stain, Sikkens Cetol, Penofin) outperform film-forming products in Calgary because they soak into the wood and flex with the freeze-thaw rather than cracking off in chips. Most Calgary cedar restoration is on a 3-year cycle for south-facing, 5-year for shaded. Pair wood restoration with fence cleaning for matching perimeter wood, with deck cleaning for newer wood that just needs the lighter pass or with sealing services for the sealing menu.

Calgary wood restoration reviews
10-year-old cedar deck that had gone silver-grey and splintery. Hartford did the full strip-sand-brighten-stain sequence over 10 days. The deck looks the way it did the year it was built. Booked them for the fence next.
Pressure-treated deck with patchy old stain. Crew stripped what was left, brightened the underlying wood, applied a new semi-transparent. Three years on and the colour is still holding — first time we have gotten that long on a Calgary deck.
Cedar pergola over the back patio. The crew handled the strip without damaging the underlying joinery, sanded only what needed sanding, finished with Penofin. The pergola is the focal point of our back yard now.
Front entry steps and railings in cedar that had been neglected for years. Hartford did the restoration, flagged two railing pickets that needed replacement, gave us the carpenter name. Total project landed at the quoted price.

Full restoration is three visits over 7-14 days. Penetrating semi-transparent stains recommended for Calgary climate. Replacement boards through a carpenter contractor we will recommend.
