Calgary gutter cleaning with a hand-clear, flush and brighten pass

Debris bagged off the roof, every downspout flushed and confirmed flowing, tiger stripes on the aluminum brightened. The trough clean alone leaves the oxidation streaks visible from the street — most Calgary homes need both services to look right. Typical bungalow runs $180, two-storey $300-$450 depending on linear feet and brightening add-on.

Why clear plus brighten matters

The trough work happens inside, the brightening happens outside

Gutter cleaning is what happens inside the trough. Debris is bagged out by hand, downspouts are flushed at low pressure, water flow is confirmed at every elbow. That stops the overflow that drips foundation water into the basement window wells. But it leaves the unsightly black streaks (tiger stripes) on the front face of the aluminum. Those come from oxidation reacting with airborne grime, and they need a mild acid wash and a rinse to lift. Most Calgary homes need both services at the same visit. When you pair gutter cleaning with roof cleaning or house washing, the rinse from those services lands in the troughs and we flush the residue down the downspout at the end of the visit. That is the cheapest gutter clean you will ever get because the crew is already on the ladders for the roof or house work.

How a Calgary gutter clean runs

Four steps from full trough to clear downspout

  1. Ladder set-up and inspection

Ladders placed on stable ground, foot protected on the soffit, downspouts traced from trough to splash block. We note any sagging sections, joint separations or missing elbows before any work starts.

  2. Hand-clear and bag

Debris cleared by hand and dropped into a bag on the ladder, not onto the lawn. Leaves, twigs, shingle grit, the occasional roof bird-nest. Bag is sealed and removed at the end of the visit.

  3. Downspout flush and brighten

Low-pressure water at the trough sends the silt down the downspout, every elbow checked for blockages. Brighten pass with a mild aluminum-safe acid wash to lift the tiger stripes on the visible face.

  4. Walkaround and report

Walkaround with you at the end so you can see the cleared troughs from the ladder. Any grading or downspout-extension issues flagged in writing so you have the punch list for the next contractor.

Calgary gutter realities

Hail debris, maple keys and the spring snowmelt overflow

Calgary gutters fill faster than most cities. Late summer hail strips shingle grit into the troughs. September and October drop maple keys and pine needles in the older neighbourhoods. November snow drifts pack the downspout elbow if it was not cleared in October. Then April snowmelt arrives, hits a packed trough, overflows down the siding and into the foundation window wells. The annual basement flood call is usually a gutter problem, not a foundation problem. Two passes a year is the right cadence — late spring after the chinook debris, late October before the snow. Pair with roof cleaning for the same crew visit since the roof wash residue is going to land in the troughs anyway, or with house washing when the gutter brightening is part of the curb-appeal plan. Talk to us about a twice-yearly maintenance schedule so it is on the calendar before the call.

Gutter cleaning questions

Calgary gutter cleaning, answered

Five questions that come up on most gutter quotes.

Twice a year for most Calgary homes — once in late spring after the snowmelt and chinook debris cycle, once in late October after the leaves drop. Homes under mature trees (Mount Pleasant, Briar Hill, the older Mission streets) often need a third pass in early August to clear maple keys and pine needles that block the troughs before the autumn rains hit.
Gutter cleaning is what happens inside the trough — debris bagged out, downspouts flushed, water flow confirmed. Gutter brightening is what happens outside — the tiger stripes (oxidation streaks on aluminum) softened with a mild acid wash and rinsed. They are two services priced separately, and most homes need both at the same visit. The trough clean alone leaves the unsightly black stripes on the front of the house.
No, with our method. Debris is cleared by hand and bagged off the roof, then a low-pressure flush takes the silt down the downspout. Seamless aluminum does not like high-pressure tips inside the trough — they dent the metal and damage the joiner seal where the spike meets the fascia. Hand-clear plus low-flush is the safe method, and it is what we use on every Calgary job.
Regular blockages and the rinse work happens in the warmer months, spring through fall. We do not do ice dam removal in winter because the technique is different (steam plus careful chipping) and we are booked solid for pre-snow gutter clears in October and post-snow clears in April. For an active winter ice dam, a roof-specialist contractor is the right call.
Yes, included in every gutter clean. We confirm each downspout flows freely, point out any that have crushed elbows or disconnected extensions, and flag obvious grading issues where water is pooling at the foundation. We do not do downspout extension or grading work ourselves but we will name the trades for you so the gutter clean is not the end of the problem.

Twice-yearly contract for our Briar Hill house. The crew comes spring and fall, bags debris, flushes everything and brightens the front face. The basement window wells stay dry. Worth every dollar.

Tiger stripes had been on the gutters for ten years. I thought they were permanent. Hartford did the acid-wash brighten in one visit and the aluminum looks like the day it was installed. Now I have a maintenance plan.

The crew bagged the debris cleanly and the lawn stayed clean. Bagged the bird nest from the corner downspout I had been ignoring for two years. Honest crew, no upsell on services we did not need.

Booked the gutter clean as an add-on to the roof wash. Total job took half a day, both services on the same ladder set-up, combined price was lower than what one estimator quoted me for the gutters alone.
